3 Exercises to Help Unlock Tight Hips

Tight Hips - Posture Ellie - Fix Posture - Egoscue Method

Do you have tight hips? Keep reading this article to find out a little bit more as to why your hips might be tight. I have even filmed a 20 minute video routine (linked below) to help as well.

I also wanted to let you know about my upcoming 3 Week Tight Hips Challenge happening LIVE (via Zoom) this November!

Tight Hips are one of THE most common complaints that I hear about … and, in a nutshell, it’s really obvious why. WE ARE SAT DOWN MOST OF THE TIME AND HAVE BEEN FOR YEARS.

Humans are made to walk, run, climb trees, squat, dance, sleep, swim, scramble … all sorts. What they are not made for is to be stuck still in one position the whole time.

Sitting itself isn’t ‘wrong’ or ‘bad’ … it’s just that doing ANYTHING for multiple hours of the day and staying stationary will mess up your body. It just so happens that sitting is the poisoned chalice most of us start sipping on from a very young age. Unfortunately, being sat on our (flat pancake) arses is considered ‘normal’ when it is anything but(t) … ‘scuse the pun.

When we are sat down, our hips are in flexion. When we stand up, our hips (should be) in extension. If we spend longer sat down than we do standing, we disrupt this balance and the body loses the inability to stand up properly with extended hips. The hips cannot extend as they are too tense in flexion. Often the body is pulled forwards in front of the ankles, the lumbar spine hyperextends, the ribcage flares or the knees/feet twist out externally to compensate for this lack of hip extension.

Tight hips genuinely cause pain all over the body. The amount of various symptoms that originate from hips that cannot move is almost immeasurable – it’s so, so vast. So many ‘mysterious’ ailments and symptoms could be significantly relieved if only tension was released from the engine of the body but also the home of many of the major internal organs. This is not just a musculoskeletal issue, it effects digestion, breathing,  blood flow and function of the brain, balance, excretion and other systems within the body. I also believe that having tension in the hips (or anywhere really) feeds into negative mental health. When you can’t move well you physically feel sh*t and this will take it’s toll over time.

It’s also important to consider that having loose hips isn’t just about moving the leg (read – cranking your hip around trying to ‘stretch’ it out … you’ll get nowhere), it’s about arm, ribcage, shoulder, spinal and foot movement and function. In order to have loose, mobile hips, you need to have a balanced, strong and functional body ALL OVER.

Luckily, you have me to guide you and give the sweet, sweet magic of what looser hips feel like!

Firstly, I have The 3 Week Tight Hips Challenge happening this November 2023. Watch the 5 minute video below to hear more about it.

Once you’re done reading that and you’ve signed up, check out the free 20 minute routine below (also on my YouTube) that which will give you a mini-taster of the sorts of things you can expect!

In the video below, I offer you 3 exercises which should help unlock tight hips, and it’s done through a combination of lengthening the distance between the ribcage and the pelvis, creating pelvic balance and asking for hip rotation.

If you notice some INTENSE stretching through your groin and inner thighs, it’s a strong sign your hips are, indeed, extremely tight. You will hopefully notice this routine helps unlock tension through your hips (and maybe even elsewhere).

If your body locks up, gets angry at you or if any of your pain gets worse, then this is not the exercise for you. PLEASE NEVER push through pain or tension, even a little bit, as you’ll always feel worse afterwards.

If you’d like more assistance from me then please have a look at My Services and the different ways I can help you.

I hope you enjoy – listen to your body and stop if needed!
